Healthy Children’s Knowledge and Perception on Cancer

Abstract

To determine healthy children’s knowledge and perception about cancer. This qualitative phenomenological study was conducted at a primary and at a high school (n = 20). The research data were collected through interviews and observations using the “Child Information Form” and the “Interview Form”. The mean age of the children was 13.55 ± 2.11 years. The themes were designated as follows: Information, Emotions, Awareness and Solutions. It was observed that the vast majority of the healthy children participating in this study have a detailed, scientific, realistic knowledge of the disease. The children’s inner circle was their most important source of information about cancer. The children demonstrated a high awareness of cancer, using expressions like psychological robustness and post-traumatic growth. They proposed innovative and promising new solutions for cancer prevention and treatment.
