Abstract

In this article we analyse the causes for some complaints about statistical education. We also present some suggestions how to improve the situation. The deficiencies mentioned are: Job candidates which have passed a study in Economics reveal a substantial weakness or inability to deal with data sets from Official Statistics. Academic representatives of economic and social statistics, complain the disappearance of their subject in the academic schedules. The deployment of Bachelor courses will weaken the status of statistics as subject. It is investigated which factors hamper the economic and social statistics in their competition with other subjects at faculties of economics and management science. The relationship of Official statistics and academic research is also investigated. The effect of the launch of Bachelor curricula is treated here on the basis of an empirical survey of 117 degree programs at universities and technical schools in summer 2006. The results reveal an overwhelming dispersion in the effort for quantitative education, annihilating all attempts to standardize statistical education. In the summary we vote for a specialization of curricula at different academic levels. If German Official Statistics is interested in more impact on academic teaching it should interfere at universities. For this purpose 10 proposals are made. Copyright Springer 2008
