Streamlining a short supply chain for increased agricultural resilience and global market opportunities: the case of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) in Caraga Region, Philippines

This study examines the lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) supply chain in the Caraga Region, Philippines, to evaluate its potential in enhancing agricultural resilience and entering global markets. A mixed-methods approach, combining descriptive statistics, cost-return analysis, and supply chain mapping, was used to assess six farm sites totaling 3.65 hectares, and the key actors involved in production, processing, and distribution. Findings reveal a short, locally focused supply chain that delivers an average yield of 1.1 MT/ha/month and a return on investment (ROI) of 149.7% for producers. While the chain demonstrates profitability and inclusive participation, it faces constraints such as limited technical knowledge, weak logistics, low product demand, and underdeveloped market linkages. Integrating lemongrass into urban, peri-urban, and vertical agriculture systems, supported by research and development, improved infrastructure, and stronger marketing, could prepare the crop for scale-up. Its essential oil, hydrosol, and other value-added forms are in growing global demand, offering opportunities for export-oriented processing. This study provides a roadmap for transforming lemongrass into a climate-resilient, high-value crop that contributes to rural livelihoods, industry development, and sustainable agriculture in the Philippines.
