Abstract

It has been 61 years after the first successful human organ transplant from a live donor in December 23rd 1954. A treatment method which was not even considered before, now become a hope for thousands of patients. Organ transplantations are still not at desired level. Even though there has been a great progress in legal and technical infrastructure of the problem, individuals’ lack of knowledge and biased approach the subject matter makes it harder to find a solution. For this reason, thousands of individuals are losing their lives on the waiting lists while waiting for a hope. According to Barnett et.al., (1993: 669), every year more organs are buried under ground than demanded. Organ transplantation which happens to be a breakthrough technology in saving human lives now became a victim of its own success (Gabel, 2003: 1245). It has been found that in Turkish economics literature organ donation and transplantation topics are not investigated enough. The main purpose of this study is to fill the gap in this area while analyzing problems which we came across in Turkey and around the world and recommend appropriate policy changes.
