Abstract

Rapid progresses in science and technology, industrialization, population growth, urbanization and environmental problems change the social structure, as well. These changes affect also the family, which is the most important unit of the society. Family is the first place where the individual is prepared for the society and the socialization begins. Considering consumption requirement of each individual and family in the society, the role of decisions and behaviors in the matter of purchasing, using and throwing away the wastes in protecting or polluting the environment is indisputable. The purpose of efforts made in the matter of protection, development and improvement of the environment is to enable individuals to live in a healthier and more secure environment. This can be achieved just by the individual himself/herself. That is because it is the individual who damages or protects and develops the environment. At the present time, environmental awareness accepts living in a healthy environment as one of the fundamental human rights. That is possible just through a quality education. It is indisputable that environmental problems will become more serious in 21st century unless environmental education and awareness is provided to the every segment of the society, beginning with the individual, and necessary measurements are taken.
