Abstract

This article aims at both estimating agrarian growth and establishing the trends and changes in the composition of agrarian output in Western Andalusia during the early modern period. Main sources used have been the rentas de las mitras and the tithe registers from the Cabildo of Seville Cathedral. Agrarian growth has been estimated following a product approach. The main results are: 1) in the 17th and 18th centuries, agrarian growth in Western Andalusia was fairly modest; 2) between 1580 and 1685 the region experienced an intense agrarian depression, mainly due to both wine and oil production dip; and 3) after a rather favorable economic balance in the course of the 16th century —at least until 1580— Western Andalusia failed to develop its potential for agrarian growth during the two following centuries.
