Abstract

The following article focuses on the specific topic of the role of money and wealth in the German cultural period of Romanticism. The periodical borders are understood broadly, going beyond the 1840ies (as the generally acknowledged end point of literary Romanticism in the German speaking world) and ranging up to Richard Wagner’s opera writings as an example of cultural Romanticism. The article will consider the functions of wealth and economical knowledge and thinking in three exemplary texts by Joseph von Eichendorff, Ludwig Tieck, and Richard Wagner. As a result, the article will show provide a deeper insight into the conjunction of canonized literary writing and questions of economy and wealth as well as point out the negative implications of wealth.
