Abstract

This paper analyzes the Mexican long-term changes of income distribution inequality by factors’ decomposition during the period 1968-2002. Dominance and ordering criteria is used, and also a parametric estimation (Fields, 2003) using Theil’s index decomposition. Monetary income of Household’s Income and Expenditure Surveys 1968, 1984, 1996 and 2002 is used as an information core. Inequality decreased in the 1968-1984 period; increased after 1984. Education is the explanatory characteristic which explains total inequality the most.
