Abstract

The objective of this paper is to estimate the economic impact of cruise tourist expenditures in José Azueta county. Although cruise tourism only recently arrived in this región, it is considered to hold important potential for economic development in the región. The research methods employed include regional economic tools of base analysis, multiplier effects, and economic impact analysis. Interviews of tourists and tourism related businesses were conducted in 2005 and were extrapolated to the level of total cruise tourist visits and to the relevant business sectors of the county. Results show a substantial economic impact of cruise tourists on the county and identify opportunities to reduce the amount of leakage and increase the local drop from cruise visitors to Azueta county, México.
