This paper explores the intricate relationship between sustainability and tourism in the Algarve, specifically focusing on the Green Key label’s role in hotels and hospitality enterprises in the Algarve region. The study highlights the importance of the Green Key certification in driving eco-conscious practices within the tourism sector, tracing the evolution of sustainable tourism in the Algarve. The Algarve region serves as a captivating backdrop for this investiga tion. The research methodology was conducted on establishments that won the Green Key certification in 2023. The analysis of questionnaire results is a focal point, offering insights into establishment profiles, motivations for participating in the Green Key program, the tangible and intangible benefits derived, compliance with certification criteria, and establishments’ plans for sustainability. The findings reveal a strong commitment to sustainable prac tices among various types of accommodations, with long-term Green Key award holders demonstrating significant environmental awareness. Additionally, the results highlight that Green Key certification positively impacts brand reputation, customer loyalty, and operational efficiency, emphasizing its role in promoting sustainability within the tourism sector. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on eco-certifications by demonstrating their practical value in enhancing business performance while supporting environmental goals. Practically, the study provides valuable guidance for policymakers, tourism stakeholders, and hospitality managers aiming to integrate sustainability frameworks and certifications as strategic tools for responsible tourism development in the Algarve and beyond.
