Abstract

Bangladesh is an export-oriented economy with major policy incentives for export promotion. Thus, it is very interesting to find out the factors that determine the pattern of its export demand since once these factors can be identified and the extent of their effect on export demand estimated, it should help formulate policies to enhance exports. The objective of this paper is to estimate export demand functions of total exports and exports to fifteen major trading partners of Bangladesh over the period 1972/73 to 1997/98. The reason for taking the fifteen major trading partners is that it accounts for approximately 90 per cent of total exports and each country has consistent data for the relevant variables over the entire period. Similar estimations on export demand are also available in the literature for earlier and shorter periods of time.
