A Multi-Input Multi-Output Analysis of Factor Substitution in United Kingdom Agriculture

Abstract

Factor substitution is a continuous process in agriculture. Fanners substitute one factor for another in production. U.K. agriculture witnessed radical changes in factor substitution during the last few decades. These changes are mainly due to rapid scientific and technological advances and the increasing application of modern technology in agriculture. The main objective of this paper is to analyse the nature of factor substitution in U.K. agriculture in a multi-input-multi-output framework. The specific objectives are: i) to investigate the changing input demand by estimating the own-and cross-price elasticities of demand for the major agricultural inputs, and ii) to measure the substitutability and complementarity relation- ships among the inputs by estimating the Allen Elasticities of Substitution (AES), Morishima Elasticities of substitution (MES) and Shadow Elasticities of Substitution (SES)
