Abstract

This article provides an analysis of the European sovereign debt crisis. We first highlight the origins of the crisis through an examination of the structural problems existing in the euro zone and particularly in the bailed-out countries. We then study the various reforms that the European Union and some countries have put in place to solve the crisis and describe the contagion risk that may spread to other members of the Economic and Monetary Union. Finally, we discuss and propose a number of reforms that could strengthen the euro zone and help prevent another debt crisis.
