Debilidad regulatoria de los transgénicos en Guatemala, alternativas, riesgos, amenazas e intereses

Abstract

La introducción en Guatemala de los Organismos Genéticamente Modificados (OGM), conocidos también como transgénicos, se ha dado en un marco jurídico e institucional con muchas debilidades y sin ninguna ley que los regule hasta el día de hoy. Los transgénicos ingresaron en Guatemala cuando algunas empresas iniciaron a experimentar con productos agrícolas en 1989, además se han introducido como ayuda alimentaria proveniente de Estados Unidos. En la actualidad sectores políticos, sociales y académicos se pronuncian al respecto, entablándose un profundo debate por el grado de incertidumbre e intereses comerciales que existe sobre los OGM. Por un lado se toman a los transgénicos como alternativa agrícola por la posible productividad que se obtendría con este tipo de semillas, aunque no haya evidencia que esto sea así, pretendiendo únicamente aprovechar la coyuntura por empresas productoras de transgénicos para posicionarse en el mercado regional. Por otro lado, no se cuenta con estudios concluyentes sobre los impactos de los OGM a la biodiversidad y efectos hacia la salud humana, constituyéndose así como una amenaza para los pequeños agricultores, habiendo mucha oposición por parte de grupos sociales y académicos. Este trabajo, tiene como propósito analizar el marco legal e institucional sobre los transgénicos y sobre todo las diferentes posiciones de los sectores para ampliar la limitada información y propiciar un mejor conocimiento sobre los OGM en Guatemala.
