Impacto de las regulaciones ambientales en las estrategias de comercialización del café costarricense

Abstract

El uso de instrumentos de gestión ambiental se ha introducido paulatinamente en la forma de hacer negocios de las empresas. Sea por presión externa o por iniciativa local, la implementación de este tipo de prácticas ha venido en aumento y con ello más firmas han visualizado a través de estos esquemas importantes herramientas de apoyo y proyección de sus estrategias comerciales. En el caso del sector caficultor nacional, inicialmente la necesidad de desarrollar procesos de gestión ambiental respondió a una presión interna (legislación ambiental), impactando directamente al sector beneficiador pero sin el mismo efecto real sobre el sector agrícola. No obstante, han sido las demandas del comprador internacional, situado en las fases de la cadena más cerca al consumidor final, el factor que ha llevado a productores agrícolas y a empresas beneficiadoras a formalizar de alguna u otra forma este tipo de sistemas. En esta línea de discusión, el objetivo central de este artículo es evaluar cómo las regulaciones ambientales internacionales impactan el comportamiento comercial de los agentes ubicados en la cadena nacional del café costarricense. Básicamente, se analiza por medio de un estudio de caso la influencia de estas regulaciones en el comportamiento comercial de productores y empresas beneficiadoras.
