Abstract

Frank Wilkinson (1934-2021) fue, hasta cierto punto, un académico atípico. Nacido en una familia humilde de mineros del condado de Derbyshire (Reino Unido), tuvo que abandonar sus estudios a los 15 años y entrar en la vida laboral típica de una persona de clase obrera. Trabajó en la agricultura, de cocinero (durante tres años de servicio militar, cuando este era obligatorio en el Reino Unido) y de metalúrgico. Fue gracias a los programas educativos establecidos para dar oportunidades a trabajadores que pudo realizar, con el apoyo de Ken Coates, estudios universitarios, graduarse en Oxford y acceder, a una edad relativamente avanzada, a la docencia en la Universidad de Cambridge.
