Abstract

ABSTRACT By using the well-known Balassa-Samuelson (BS) hypothesis, in this paper we aim to draw some lessons on the future of the European Monetary Union (EMU). To this end the evolution of price differentials among Spanish regions are studied using a sample spanning from 1955 to 1999 for the 17 Spanish Comunidades Autónomas. The results show that the BS hypothesis is a relevant variable in explaining the evolution of price differentials in monetary unions, although we cannot disregard the influence of another set of variables. Consequently, future work must be devoted to analyse this subject.
