Abstract

ABSTRACT Recent research (Quah, 1996b and Rodríguez Pose, 1998) indicate that European regions are recording simultaneous processes of convergence and divergence, showing the diferential capacities of regions to adapt to a changing economic environment. A crucial determinant of regional adaptability is capital availability. This paper applies a fixed-effects model used only with real variables before to study the evolution of Spanish regions access to credit. The results show the presence of regional financial convergence in Spain, and indicate tentatively that the existence of regional banking institutions can be a specific factor favouring the reduction of financial and real disparities.
