Abstract

SUMMARY This work revises some methodological aspects related to Theil s population-weighted index decomposition by multiplicative factors (when it is adapted to income per head analysis). First, the traditional decomposition formula takes into account the interactions between factors, but in a fairly restrictive way. Thus, we suggest a variation; second, we discuss the possibility for aggregating initial factors according to a variety of reasons; third, we argue that this decomposition can be easily extended to between and within-group inequality components. Finally, we make a brief empirical illustration for the Spanish provinces.
