Abstract
ABSTRACT In the last quarter of the 19th century, the fishing sector in Andalusia, just as in other coastal regions in Spain, experiments a phase of liberalisation, although it has to face certain challenges. Though a truly precise knowledge of fishing in Andalusia is limited by the deficiency of the available statistical data, a general description of the stage in question may be given. An important feature is that the development of the railway favoured an increase of the demand in the interior of the country and expanded the market for fresh fish, resulting in higher catch volumes; at the same time, the fish canning industry experimented a period of modernisation and growth. Due to these factors, the fishing sector in Andalusia as well as the whole of Spain underwent a series of changes and transformations.
