Abstract
ABSTRACT Andalusia and Extremadura have suffered from very high unemployment rates during recent decades, rates that are greater than those of the rest of Spain. This article tries to expose plausible explanations for this phenomenon. Our basic period of analysis is 1980-2000. In our work we attend to the main variables of the labour market (including institutional factors): unemployment, labour force, employment, wages, unions, unemployment compensations, productivity, etc. To deepen in our diagnosis we also follow shift-share and virtual economies analyses. Andalusia and Extremadura show several common problems in this area, but also important differences in certain factors.
