Abstract

SUMMARY This paper quantifies the effects of farm size and other structural factors on the productivity of labor in the regions of four southern European countries. A theoretical model is developed to test for differences in the productivity of labor for farms of different sizes located in regions with the same level of income, and to examine possible differences in the productivity of labor for farms of the same size located in regions with different income levels. Results confirm the negative effects of land fragmentation on labor productivity and, accordingly, on agricultural production and income.
