El Impacto De La Apertura Comercial Sobre El Empleo Informal En El Sector Manufacturero De Costa Rica Durante El Período 1996-2009

Abstract

En este artículo se analiza el impacto de la apertura comercial sobre el empleo informal en el sector manufacturero costarricense durante el período 1996-2009. Aunque la apertura afecta de manera distinta a las empresas que solamente producen bienes para el mercado interno y las que se orientan a exportar su producción, se espera que el efecto de las empresas exportadoras que generan empleos formales predomine, y por tanto, se plantea como hipótesis que un aumento en la apertura comercial genera una reducción de la informalidad. Se encontró que no existe evidencia estadística que indique que el proceso de apertura que experimentó Costa Rica durante ese período haya tenido un efecto positivo o negativo sobre el empleo en el sector informal de la economía en la rama de manufactura.
