Capital social y su vínculo con la pobreza en Costa Rica

Abstract

Este artículo explora algunas de las relaciones teóricas y empíricas entre el capital social y la pobreza en Costa Rica. Se define "capital social" como el valor de las relaciones sociales mediadas por "normas de reciprocidad". Se usan datos de la encuesta de Opinión Pública de América Latina (2004) y del Censo de Población y Vivienda (2000). Se comprobó que la pobreza disminuye, conforme aumenta el capital social. Los estratos bajos y altos participan más en organizaciones formales e informales que el estrato medio. Las zonas urbanas tienen una menor probabilidad de ser pobres, en comparación con los barrios rurales. Sin embargo, las áreas rurales posen más capital social. Investigaciones futuras deben tratar de mejorar las mediciones de capital social, estudiar a fondo las organizaciones y redes donde participan los pobres y profundizar en los tipos del capital social que contribuyen a disminuir la pobreza en el país.
