Abstract

The research of the Centro in Portici in the 1970s shows the profound influence of the founder, Manlio Rossi-Doria. In particular, the specific culture characterising the social research developed at the Centro is a mix of different elements: an interdisciplinary methodological approach, ample use of inquiries as fact-finding tools and an aptitude to take political sides in the debate on growth and the development of “Mezzogiorno”(South of Italy). It is indeed an original combination, not widely shared with other research centres of the time. On the basis of some of the most significant documents, the paper sets out to show that this particular mix is to be found in all the fields of the research activity of the Centro, from agrarian economics and policy, to political economy, economic policy and sociology.
