Abstract

[eng] Economie Growth : a Means to Fight Pollution ? Lessons from the Environmental Kuznets Curve. The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) suggests that the relationship between environmental degradation and product per capita can be represented by an inverted-U curve. The EKC appeared at the beginning of the 1990s in Grossman and Krueger [1991] and Shafik [1994]. This rela- tionship has since been re-examined both empirically and theoretically. The purpose of this survey is twofold. First, I shall study the major theoretical basis of this relation and provide an econo- metrical survey of the EKC. Second, I shall describe analyses which test whether the EKC is an automatic result of economic growth, or if other economic, social or institutional factors have an impact on the relationship between growth and the environment. Finally, this survey will enable us to pinpoint policies in favour of sustainable development.
