Abstract

[eng] The industrial structure of a patent race with flxed costs and variable costs. . In this paper, we study a model of patent race integrating explicity fixed as well as variable costs of R&D. We find results that generalize the conclusions of Loury (1979) and Lee Wilde (1980). We emphazise the importance of the shape of the technology of R&D on the industrial structure of the patent race. We find cases where the solution of the game is a natural oligopoly of R&D (or monopoly) and other cases where there is intense competition in R&D. We characterize also the configurations of parameters where R&D occurs effectively. Finally we present some comparative static on the R&D equilibrium.
