Infrastructure Funding : a Long-Term Perspective

Abstract

[eng] Precise analysis of the methods of funding certain infrastructure at carefully selected moments, in function of the long-term fluctuations that have been identified, should shed light on the dynamic history of infrastructure. The preceding lines lead us to distinguish five distinct periods over the two centuries under review : that of the infrastructure already begun before the French Revolution, and still predominant into the 1820s ; that of the first wave of railroad and mine construction during the first period of industrialization (1840 to 1880) ; that of the second period of industrialization and its new networks at the time of the republican compromise on public service (1890 to 1940) ; that of the big national companies and rapid growth (1950 to 1970) ; and that of current deregulation and diversification with the advent of globalized markets. .
