Abstract

[eng] This article is concerned with the place of organisations and institutions in Marshall's economics. The point of departure is the question of the relevance of an evolutionary interpretation of Marshall's work : Interestingly, modern evolutionary economists have tended to cast some doubt on the adequacy of such an interpretation. The article tires to counter this scepticism. To this purpose, we begin by discussing the role of organisations in Marshall's analysis. We show why this focuses, above, all on the productive sphere of the economy. We then proceed to the role played by institutions. These act more as constraints than as a driving motor in Marshall's dynamics. Finally, the article provides some indications as to how the way in which Marshall links dynamics, organisation and institutions encourages a positive re-evaluation of an evolutionary reading of Marshall.
