Abstract

[eng] Abstract University professors sometimes benefit from ties with private industry, especially through commercially motivated mechanism of technology transfer. In this paper, the author examines how the head of the Laboratory of applied electronics at the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal used such mechanism, between 1937 and 1975, to exploit the commercial potential of his research products. Since historians have previously documented the various types of mechanism used by institutions in the 20th century, this paper will focus on the factors that explain the beginning, the course and the termination of the commercial process of transfer. It will be shown that the shape of commercial structures of transfer, negotiations with commercial partners, the professor's monetary motivations, the acknowledgement of patent protection and the start-up of new companies constitute key factors for understanding the process of technology transfer.
