Abstract

Unemployed people who are RMI recipients have to face numerous difficulties in order to find a job : having little training, often isolated, most of them have been unemployed for more than a year and find themselves in com petition on the labour market with younger job seekers. However, their difficulties in finding employment are not greater than those of other unemployed people having similar characteristics (age, diplomas, duration of unemployment). . For unemployed people, the RMI seems to have succeeded in making up fortheir practical and cultural difficulties by enabling them to lookmore actively fora job. Moreover, the minimum income system does not seem to have encouraged non-working people to come back into the labour-market On the other hand it seems to contribute to maintain on that market unemployed people who would otherwise have stopped looking for a job.
