Abstract

[eng] Industries are Moving West and South-West - The regions with old industries in the north and north-east of France were seriously affected by the crisis. The regions in the west and south-west, where industries were set up more recently, were less affected. The drop in employment was less noticeable and there was a rapid growth rate in . industrial added value. These variations can be explained by the differences in industrial structures. Wherever industries are not very diversified, the specialization in activities which have problems, such as the rubber, steel, textile, or smelting industries, leads to a decline. On the contrary, the high performance of the farm produce industries contributes to the support of the Breton industry. Yet each region also has its own dynamics which reinforces or thwarts the assets or handicaps resulting from the structure of the productive environment. This regional effect is predominant.
