Abstract

[eng] Groups and Changes in the Productive System -When they were faced with the depression which followed the 1974 oil crisis, groups adapted by radically changing . their structures. The largest ones simultaneously took over companies, gave up numerous activities and reinvested in others. In an economic environment which was unfavorable to large economic units, some of the groups, including the leading ones, made full use of the flexibility granted by their structure: the division into smaller, relatively specialized, companies provides the potential for adaptation and these groups made the most of it. On the contrary, the large groups which were narrowly confined within those sectors particularly affected by the crisis, were condemned either to disappear, or to become much smaller.
