Abstract

[eng] Marriage and the first child : a loosening link - Until 1972, women had been conceiving their first child in an increasing proportion outside of the institution of marriage. But, in most cases, they were marrying before the birth of the child. The growth of the rate of conceptions outside of marriage was then interrupted by the diffusion of modern means of contraception. Starting in 1 978, the trend began again. It was attributable not to very young women, as had been the case in the 1960s, but to slightly older ones. These conceptions have terminated more and more often in births outside of marriage. . The link between first births and marriage has also loosened within marriage itself. Before, conceptions within the first months of marriage were very frequent. Today, they are scarcely more probable than in the course of the following two or three years. . These shifts started earlier among couples where the man was a cadre and even more so where the woman herself was highly educated. The advancing of a woman's age at the time of a first birth, now a general phenomenon, also occurred earlier among the most educated women.
