Abstract

[eng] Cohabitation : one million non-married couples - In 1968, 67,000 non-married couples of which the man was less than 35 years old were counted. Today, there are almost 600,000. These figures offer a measurement of the development of « living together » among young people. While « living together » is developing, it is also becoming ordinary. One quarter of non- married couples made up of two single people live with a child. Cohabitation without marriage touches all social categories. It has spread also to foreigners settled in France for a long time. Non-married couples can be distinguished less and less from married couples. Thus, the partners have the same difference of average age in the two cases. « Living together » is, however, more common among atypical couples in particular when the woman has a higher social status than her partner. It is also more common in Paris than in the provinces. People from the northern part of France remain the most attached to marriage. Over the last twenty years, young people have been marrying less and less. But this is not only because they are « living together » more often. Disaffection with regard to marriage and the development of cohabitation are far from finding an equilibrium. The proportion of young people living in couples, married or not, is decreasing.
