Changes in Latvia's science indicators in the transformation period

Abstract

This study investigates how the changes in science, industry and the economy in Latvia, brought about by independence from the former Soviet Union, have affected the science and technology indicators. Although the number of researchers has decreased considerably, the total number of publications of Latvia's scientists has remained practically stable. The proportions of publications in different science fields has changed. Due to changes in industry and the patent system the quantity of patents granted has decreased drastically. Latvia's scientists have published less in the journals of the former USSR. Substantially more publications are written in co-operation with authors from other countries (beyond the former USSR), and citation of Latvia's publications has increased One of the main conclusions is that there has been a reorientation of Latvia's science from the former USSR scientific network to the global science system.
