Abstract

The energy-based ecological criterion consisting of maximizing a function representing the best compromise between the rate of energy pumping and the dissipation of the rate of energy pumping of an endoreversible two-mass-reservoir chemical pump cycle is first deduced. The fundamental optimal relation between the ecological criterion and the coefficient of performance (COP) of the chemical pump cycle, in which mass transfer between the working fluid and the mass reservoirs obeys both linear and diffusive mass transfer laws, is derived. Numerical examples are provided to show the effects of cyclic parameters on the ecological criterion versus COP characteristic of the cycles with both linear and diffusive mass transfer laws, and the effects of mass transfer law on ecological performance are discussed in detail. The results can provide some theoretical guidelines for the design of practical chemical pumps. Copyright The Author 2010. Published by Oxford University Press. All rights reserved.
