Abstract

The 'Manchester model' has been the subject of intense debate and scrutiny (Du, Yuan and Coyle, 2026; McCann and Ortega:Argilés, 2026). A key question is what has driven Manchester's economic performance and what policy lessons emerge for other UK cities in the context of the country's weak aggregate, and highly uneven, productivity growth.
