Auswirkungen belastender Arbeitsbedingungen auf die Qualität privater Lebensverhältnisse

Abstract

The article studies work and nonwork related antecedents of Work-to-Family Conflicts (WFC) by using data from the German study “employment relationships as social exchange” (beata). Conceptualizing the employment relationship as social exchange enables us to explain them more detailed than in existing studies. The results show that WFC is caused by specific work-related resources and demands as well as by characteristics of the quality of the employment relationship. Most important are the individual working time arrangements, the relation to the direct supervisor, the relationship to the colleagues, as well as the perceived demands of the employer. By contrast, sociodemographic characteristics are less important. All in all the results are quite consistent with results from more liberal market economies despite of different institutional frameworks and industrial relations. For Germany the results give important hints for possibilities to avoid WFC by re-shaping working conditions.
