Abstract

Although controversially discussed, strategic vision is considered an important function in the context of strategic activity. Against this background, the present explorative study aims to examine the sig- nificance of the strategic vision on the basis of M&A, a strategic core activity. Based on an abductive research design, we develop a framework for the managerial conceptualization of visions. Although difficult to operationalize, the vision is of high significance for managers, especially in change-intensive M&A. A positive influence on the success of M&A, however, requires an extended, process-specific conceptualization of the vision. This activity promotes the tangibility of strategic vision and thus opens up potential for a broader application in practice.
