Abstract

Along with the working time flexibility the interest in temporary leaves of absence has increased. Nevertheless, there is a lack of empirical studies on the implementation and configuration of temporary leaves of absence in companies in Germany. By presenting a study in which 349 companies were surveyed on temporary leaves of absence, the research deficit can be reduced. The analysis highlights four typical packages of reasons for implementing temporary leaves of absence and identifies three clusters of companies with similar focuses and intensities of using temporary leaves of absence. A logistic regression analysis reveals that the larger a company is the more likely is the adoption of temporary leaves of absence. Additionally, the study shows that there are no standardized guidelines which are applicable generally across companies.
