Abstract

Innovation is the result of successful product development processes. Therefore, successful product development is indispensable for future competitiveness of an enterprise and thus of strategic relevance. Still there is no generally agreed measurement for development success. The contribution focuses this problem from an interdisciplinary perspective combining engineering and economic points of view. Followed by an overview of what product development is and how its success can be defined, performance indicators are introduced as success measures. Subsequently an approach for classification of product development activities is presented. Based on this approach adequate performance indicators are attributed to each class. The use of the approach is illustrated by two practical examples.
