Abstract

The coverage of the Maastricht convergence criteria by Bulgaria has been examined for the period 2010-2015. The study results suggest that Bulgaria can successfully fulfill these criteria and join the Euro area in the coming years. An application of Bulgaria for the Euro area is recommended by 2017 while preserving the currency board arrangement and maintaining a moderate budget deficit. It is necessary to chart a roadmap for the country's accession to the Euro area and to make a public debate on the problem.
