Abstract

The intraregional development of the French Établissements Publics de Coopération Intercommunale (E.P.C.I. - local entities set up for local councils’ cooperation) of the Basse-Normandy region is described by using a typology of urban, rural or touristic areas. The specific historical territorial organizations of the industrial districts’ type do not display a strong influence and a process of desertification affects the rural areas the furthest away from the great urban centers (South of the Manche Department and west of the Orne Department). The coastal touristic territories follow a specific development.
