Abstract

Regenerative medicine: prostate seeded by a single stem cell In mice exposed to repeated cycles of androgen deprivation and androgen replacement, the prostate gland shrinks and regenerates repeatedly. This suggested the existence of prostate stem cells; various cell-surface markers have been reported to identify candidate stem cells, however they are not specific for prostate stem cells. Leong et al. now report the identification of the cytokine receptor CD117 (also called c-kit or stem cell factor receptor) as a marker of a rare adult mouse prostate stem cell population. Using this marker, in combination with others, they isolate single cells that can generate a functioning prostate when transplanted into living mice.
