Contemporary Issues of Romanian Migration Flows. From Internal Re–Migration to External Mobility

Abstract

In the wider area of mobility and space, the article focuses on the issues regarding the configuration of urban social structure through the migration theme. In Romania, the phenomena has begun decades ago, and evolved in close relationship with the main coordinates of “transition”. In the communist era, the industrialization and urbanization process determined a rural/urban migration, as well as urban to urban mobility, up to one point. The process subscribed to the broader goal to reconfigure the social structure of the population under a totalitarian regime. Since 1990, the migration process faced changes in the directions of an intense re-migration from urban to rural. The internal re–migration acknowledges a pattern of evolution to external mobility as the migration continues from rural to foreign countries due to local specific condition. The analysis identifies triggers of the migration process in Romania and conditions which supported mobility before and after 1989.The bibliography refers to writings focused on this topic, primary analysis of data obtained from a local publication and statistical data which support the theoretical considerations.
