Abstract

Studied for the French-Romanian domain, and more particularly for the translations of Victor Hugo's poetry, the opening to the Other, to the Foreigner, realized by the translations assumes that the translation is done differently from one century to another. First, we analyse the literary context of the first half of the XIXth century and the attitude of the men of letters towards the translations. Then we choose some adaptations - ethnocentric, disrespectful solutions of the linguistic and cultural identity of the original text, but typical for a certain translation policy. By parallel versions due to several translators, we notice differences that testify of the very variable availability of the Romanian language and culture to welcome and to integrate the marks of the variety, of the otherness. The most recent (re)translations rend the strangeness and give to see the specificity of the original text in an upper degree.
