Abstract

Currently, there is a tendency towards the “de-commoditization” of food, with a higher demand for quality, healthy, and safe products. In this context, cooperation in the production chain emerges as a possible strategy for agricultural producers of atomized supply to expand their capacities, add value and achieve competitive advantages through networking, compared to other actors with greater negotiating power. The literature on inter-organizational networks has emphasized the benefits of cooperation. Only recently have studies emerged that analyze failures of associative experiences under a dynamic approach, because of the high rate of networks that fail to consolidate. Therefore, the present work seeks to identify the factors of failure present in the stage of formation and development of alliances in the beef chain of southwest Buenos Aires, given the importance of bovine cattle for local territorial development and coordination difficulties that traditionally presents this chain in different countries. The investigation adopts the case method. From semi-structured interviews, the main determining factors were observed: the profile of the participants, their rivalry, the launching opportunity, and governance difficulties.
