The Last Brexit Negotiation Rounds From 2020

Abstract

The last rounds of Brexit negotiations held in Brussels and London did not deliver the expected EU results and were deeply disappointing, at least according to official statements made by Michel Barnier, the European Commission's chief negotiator after the nine round and other negotiations. Ensuring the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration remained only a desideratum and progress on the 11 areas of negotiation was modest. Divergences persisted in particular in terms of ensuring a level playing field or fair and undistorted competition, trade agreement, fisheries, effective governance framework. The exit of Great Britain without an agreement and the failure to negotiate a future partnership to limit the negative consequences of Brexit seem possible scenarios.
