Abstract

Globally, energy efficiency is becoming an increasingly important component of the energy policy, with a significant contribution to alleviating the effects of climate change, to reducing energy bills (i.e. increased access) and to ensuring energy security. The "measurable" objective of this policy is not just the overall reduction of energy consumption, but also the decoupling of economic growth from the evolution of energy demand. This latter phenomenon is already visible in many countries around the world, but also in the European Union. The long-term projections of the 2016 Reference Scenario (European Commission) show the continuation of this trend, although the picture remains heterogeneous across Member States over the projections period. After a brief presentation of the role and place that energy efficiency holds within the global sector policy as promoted by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the article highlights Romania's position among EU countries in terms of global and sectoral energy-efficiency developments and prospects.
